Photek Interview
The coolest, most elusive, truly 21st musical pioneer Photek came in to tell us about his stunning new album 'Solaris' and why he hates 'Big Brother'!
....and i'll just make the most of whatever angle they want to take on it..because there's only so much you can say on music, full-stop, isn't there? The best thing to do is to listen to it, check it out...
What have you been up to since Form and Function? Well, I've been doing stuff on my own label, releasing singles on the Photek Production label and I've done a film soundtrack..that's taken up the last year and a half really.
What was the film soundtrack? It's called 'Under the Palms', which is the last track on the album. That's the opening music for 'Under the Palms'
Is that a British film? No, its directed by my wife and she's a Dutch director, and it was out last year in Europe, but I'm not sure if it will get a British release because its subtitled..its Dutch, English and German spoken..at the moment you get subtitles for the Americans of English...It's a European Arthouse cinema.. very slick, super, aesthetic cinematography and a very solemn atmosphere..its a cool film.
How did you hook up with Robert Owens? Well I've wanted to do something with Robert Owens for ten years...ever since I first heard his voice I thought if I ever use a vocalist then that's the voice I want, and it wasn't until this year that I finally got around to doing something about it and trying to track him down, and it wasn't hard at all...his manager worked at Virgin and I mentioned it and a week later it was hooked up and he had been living in London for the last eight, nine years...and it was just the case of a phone call and pop over and play him a few loops..and he's really a pleasure to work with.
Seeing you were a big fan of Robert for such a long time, how pleased are you with the result? Really I am absolutely chuffed with the way it has come out..I went in thinking if I get two or three lines that sound like 'Tears' or 'I'll be your Friend' with that kind of feeling to them, then I would be happy..and he just delivered exactly what I wanted..I got more than I expected.
Is is true that you gave him some photos of the Bahamas to look at? It's actually the album..its just like a sea-scape, horizon-type thing..I didn't tell Robert Owens what I wanted him to do lyrically..it was just, he was like 'What do you want me to do?'..well I want you to sing like Robert Owens..and I don't really want to interfere with lyrics because that's not my thing..I mean I wrote the lyrics on 'Possibly Heaven' but I didn't want to interfere with what he was singing..I just thought the most open brief was just to show him a picture and see what it inspires him to write.
