Welcome Sean, LP, Pete and Ryan! Have you had a good summer?
Pete: Sure, I forgot that it was summer and that it passed.
Ryan: What did we do in July? We were recording.
Pete: No, we were in New York for two weeks. (Whispers to Ryan and laughs)
You've been working hard this year because you've got a new album coming out next year. But let’s go back in time - about a year ago because that's when you won your first MTV Video Music Award. Loads of bands were there; the Darkness, Linkin Park etc. Did you have a good time?
Pete: Yeah, it was incredible. Up until that point we had done some TV performances, radio shows, we did this radio show with The Cure in Washington, but to go somewhere like the VMAs where you're surrounded by absolute stardom, celebrities. We were totally out of our element.
Did you sit next to anyone cool?
Pete: We were a couple of rows back from Bruce Willis. We were on the same section as Bruce Willis and Jay-Z and Jojo. Jojo sat right in front of me.
Ryan: We sat with the Black Eyed Peas, who have become good friends. I spent a lot of time with them when I was in LA, because I got to know them through that. It's weird you know, it's weird. We try and not use the words celebrity and famous or whatever. We kind of let the people that are interviewing us go ahead and throw those words out there but it was our first experience of like, wow, this has become something more than it was you know. Something weird is going on.
And what award did you actually win that day?
Ryan: The MTV2 Award, which is voted online by viewer, which really made it cool for us because we got more votes than anyone else!
So you beat Elephant Man, Franz Ferdinand, Modest Mouse and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs in the process. Congratulations! That must have been very exciting.
Sean: Yes.
Ryan: Yeah, it was awesome.
Sean: Thank you. Actually, I didn't know that we had won. I just heard them playing our song and I was thinking why are they playing our song and then, LP was freaking out. Pete and Ryan jumped up and we won.
And you all ran up there?
Sean: Yeah. I think we stood up in the stands like 'Yeah yeah'.
Ryan: Yeah and they were like ‘You have to go now. Come on!’
LP: And Beastie Boys handed us the award. That was awesome.
Sean: And Chewbacca. |
