The Roll Deep interview
Roll Deep are in town. Actually, they've always been in town, cos this is where they grew up. London that is. More specifically, the East End of London - and as we all know, it's a bit of a breeding ground for homegrown hip-hop, grime, and UK garage with the emergence of artists such as Dizzee Rascal and Lethal B. So The-Raft sent its master of mischief, Chi, to find out of there is anything deeper, to Roll Deep. Take a peep, this don't come cheap....oh OK, I'll stop now.
T= Target: Producer FD= Flow Dan MB= Mr Breeze
How did you all come together as a group?
T- We've grown up together and we've ended up doing the music together. From school, doing other jobs we've grown up with each other.
You're all east London boys. Limehouse which you now call 'Wileout'
FD- Yeah we renamed the area! It's the estate we grew up on
Do you think East London is unleashing a lot of talent? Dizzee Rascal was with you guys and many others
T- I dont wan to boast about it but because I'm from there, there's a lot of good stuff is coming from east London. Roll Deep, you have Dizzee, Kano, Lethal B [Mo Fire Crew], Pay-As-You-Go, Rough Squad, the list goes on. Not that there's no talent elsewhere.
Has music always been the goal?
MB- I can't say it was ever a goal it was just what we know- the music. We just ended up doing it.
FD- We worked together so much, in terms of music and we realised we could make moves for ourselves and make a positive plan.
How does it feel to know your album will be hitting the shelves in June?
T- Its a double feeling; we're over the moon our album has come this far but the other side is to see how well the album does. There's a lot of pressure on us to do well.
FD- It's too early to start celebrating now.
T- We just want the album to come out, see what it does and let the music talk
So you're feeling the excitement and the pressure?
FD- Yeah straight away. I feel lucky to have come this far. And people will be thinking the album came out and didn't do well, so I do want it to be successful. |
