Happy Days

These are happy days at The-Raft, you see we have treats, and treats for you. For example friends, Love Is All have been making us swoon with pleasure – like a short sharp injection of breezy pop caterwauling it’s got more oomph, than a strawberry pop-tart laced with speed. Consisting of Nicholaus Sparding - guitar +vocals, Fredrik Eriksson - saxophone, Markus Görsch - drums, Johan Lindwall - bass guitar and Josephine Olausson - vocals + keyboard – the band have a string of live dates lined up throughout July and August, which we highly recommend you check out. If you like your music tighter than Kate Moss’ jeans, with more pop than a bottle of Diet Coke full of fizzy sweets – then they might just become the soundtrack to your summer that sees you through the long winter, and back out the other side again – those dates:

Jun 27 2006 - Madame Jo Jo's London
Jun 28 2006 - Cargo London
Jul 03 2006 - Accelerator Big One Malmö
Jul 05 2006 - Accelerator Big One Göteborg
Jul 06 2006 - Accelerator Big One Stockholm
Jul 7 2006 - Tavastia Klubi Helsinki
Aug 12 2006 - Öyaestivalen Oslo
Oct 20 2006 - Airwaves festival Reykjavik

Things are looking very good for Lily Allen we’re pleased to see. Her sticky debut single 'LDN' set the stage for what looks to be a good summer of music. Already getting lots of love from radio and press alike Lily could be the surprise success story of the year we reckon. Like Kelis, The Streets and Gwen Stefani before her, she manages to dip into a wealth of styles, and somehow glues it all together to make a simple, yet fully addictive style all of her own. Her debut album ‘Alright, Still’ comes out on July 17th.

If I were to say to you…gypsy alt-punk with a scoop of frazzled country, what would you say? You’d probably say f**k off you pretentious git, at which point I would say to you; no my friend, Gogol Bordello. Yes, the wondrous chaos of Gogol Bordello is upon us. Fed up with nu-wave electro pop, and skinny ties? We are, which is why, like a great hurricane of fresh air we’d like to point your attentions to this band. Lead singer Eugene Hutz is about as mad as any box of frogs we’ve ever seen. Looking like a cross between Adam Ant and Paula Abdul he strikes fear in the hearts of self-conscious indie scensters everywhere – which is why we love him so. Musically, it’s all fiddler’s elbows, and throat ripping howls, and frantic lunging gypsy-folk melodies covered in gasoline (I dunno, that’s just what it sounds like). Check ‘em out, for gawd sakes.

There’s no better advertisement for excessive use of drugs and alcohol that Lemmy. The Motorhead main-man thrilled us into a leaping frenzy last week in London’s Hyde Park. Not content with being the essence of rock’n’roll he managed to upstage even the mighty QOTSA. We thought that supporting the Foo Fighters may come as a bit of an ego blow for the greatest bass player alive, anywhere, but they put in one hell of a show. Queen’s Roger Taylor and Brian May showed up half way through the Foo Fighters set, and proved the influence of the great Dave Grohl does indeed stretch to the highest echelons of the rock hierarchy. Respect to Brian May’s hair – he’s still got it! These are indeed, happy days.

More next week.
